Which is to say, I'm blown away by the beauty and cleverness of his words and amazed at the number of popular songs he penned.
This year is the centennial of his birth (November 18, 1909) and so there have been many tributes and opportunities to find out more about him. I am finally beginning to see just how many songs in my repertoire have Johnny Mercer lyrics (I Though About You, Autumn Leaves, Skylark, I Remember You, My Shining Hour, Come Rain or Come Shine) and how many more there are that I've fallen in love with and want to learn (I'm Old Fashioned, Moon River, Too Marvelous for Words, Charade, Midnight Sun). And I don't know if I'll ever sing it, but of course I'm partial to "Laura."
Clint Eastwood produced a documentary, "Johnny Mercer: The Dream's on Me," that aired last week on TCM. Follow this link to the documentary on TCM's website. There are showings coming up next week and next month, so check the dates and set your TiVo. Johnny Mercer was a really soulful singer too, there's just no end to what he could do creatively.
