I started admiring the work of David Stone Martin browsing through jazz singer albums at Footlight Records when I lived in the East Village. In the years since, I've searched for his name on google, and it seems like suddenly I can find more of his art than I ever have before. I don't know what's going on but there must be more collectors out there scanning their good stuff these days. Check out this David Stone Martin Flickr set.
I love David Stone Martin's linework and you can see a lot of it in the above image. If you know anything about Art Tatum, you know he was famous for playing super-human amounts of piano with just his two hands. I like the keyboards on top of keyboards in this cover, with a random dot every so often. If I could see this in person I could better figure out the components - it looks like layers of drawing, like something you could easily accomplish in Illustrator or Photoshop today, but back in the 50's he would have done this with film I guess. Anyway, I love him. I think there are similarities between his linework and Ben Shahn's and Shahn's drawing is something I've spent a lot of time admiring.
