 This Sunday, 5/16/2010, from 3-4:30 pm I'll be performing an outdoor concert on Historic Roswell Square. The first time I played there was many years ago, marching around that very same square in a green fuzzy hat, playing clarinet with the RHS marching band. Thankfully I retired the clarinet, and the hat, so this weekend I leave the instrumentation to some guys who really know what they're doing: Louis Heriveaux, piano, Craig Shaw, bass and Marlon Patton on drums. saturday at red light cafe

This Saturday (3/6) I'll be guest singing with Braves organist Matthew Kaminski at the Red Light Cafe. Matthew has put together a great band, I've gotten to hear all the tunes in rehearsal, and it's going to be some fantastic sets Saturday night! I'm going to have a great time just listening on the tunes I'm not performing - the players are first rate: Will Scruggs on sax, Ben Weatherford on guitar, Justin Chesarek on drums and of course Matthew Kaminski on the Hammond organ. Come at 9pm, and make sure you let them know you're there to see us, there are a few acts before we go on.

We debuted one of the tunes, Rogers and Hart standard Where or When this past Wednesday on "Good Day Xtra" on Fox5. It was an early morning, but so much fun to get a glimpse of a TV studio from behind the scenes. You can check us out here while the clip is still available. the divisive art of scat singing

Pictured above are 2 of the irreplaceable masters of jazz singing, but these days opinions run the gamut on scatting. Love it or hate it - listen to WNYC's Soundcheck episode about the Art of Scatting from Feb 18, 2010 to hear more. They gave no example in the show of Kurt Elling, who I saw live last weekend - and he's definitely among the best of all time. His performance was thrilling. In Atlanta, if you ever get the chance to hear Audrey Shakir, her scat singing will wow you too.

I have a good friend, Laura Gary who teaches a music class for babies and toddlers in Decatur, GA. The above is a logo design I did for her in one of the t-shirt colorways. I've got my own t-shirt now and a tote and it's pretty darn cute, but it's super adorable-squared on those little future musicians. Laura teaches a great class, the kids and parents are really engaged and she's a natural at bringing out the little musician in everyone. 75 years of the village vanguard

Listen to this WNYC segment with Lorraine Gordon, owner of the legendary Village Vanguard jazz club in New York City. I had the pleasure of meeting her about 12 years ago when I was at the Vanguard to hear Lonnie Smith and Lou Donaldson. I had a chance to go in the back room where the musicians hang out and chat with them, and for the few minutes I was there I remember looking around trying to take in every corner of that room with every object and thing stuck to the wall reminding me that she and this room had witnessed volumes of jazz history. And in this clip Lorraine sounds the same as I remember, now at 87 years old. Pretty amazing. I hope it goes on forever.
